Position Summary
In this role, the Production Manager, Shop is responsible for managing the overall production in the scene shop.

Organization Description
Elia Kirby Productions Ltd (EKP Ltd.), doing business as the Great Northern Way Scene Shop (GNW), is a production services and custom fabrication company that builds sets, installations, and displays. In operation since 2003, the company has worked on over 1000 individual projects. With a diverse client-base that includes large institutions (e.g. Vancouver Art Gallery) to small nonprofits (e.g. Pacific Theatre) to corporate companies (e.g. TED Talks, Moment Factory, MEC), GNW operates year-round to produce an array of scenic projects and installations. Located at the western edge of the False Creek Flats and within the Arts Factory building, the GNW Scene Shop is dedicated to supporting Greater Vancouver's cultural community while providing employment to local artisans and craftspeople. GNW has 6,500 square feet of fabrication space, including a carpentry shop, paint facilities (fit-up area and spray booth), and a metal fabrication studio.

Work Performed

GNW has an opportunity for someone who is effective and finds satisfaction in leading others within a collaborative environment. Working closely with the project management team and project leads, who handle the execution of individual projects, this position ensures the smooth operation of the scene shop according to an ongoing work plan. 

  • Monitors daily work activity, shop space, and resource allocations
  • Directs manufacturing workflows, supervises building and painting of projects, prepares projects for installation off-site 
  • Establishes and develops technical and administrative methods to meet work schedules and deadlines
  • Manages materials procurement for projects and shop stock in cooperation with Project Managers and the Finance department
  • Monitors production budgets and activity in order to accurately and efficiently bill clients
  • Assists in developing quotes for clients as needed as well as developing internal budgets, according to the priorities, policies and activities
  • Implements project designs and work plans based on approved schedules and budgets in cooperation with the project management team and project leads
  • Assists in the allocation of staff time to projects and appraises staff skill competencies alongside other supervisory staff
  • Liaises with all necessary staff and contract workers regarding the efficient and precise administration of production activity
  • Maintains safe working conditions for shop personnel involved in all activities
  • Trains and supervises new and young workers in company operations, industry best practices, and health and safety protocol and procedures in collaboration with the Joint Occupational Safety and Health Committee
  • Recommends work measures to improve productivity
  • Supports company operations to continue building a sustainable business with close ties to the arts community

Working Conditions

GNW is currently located at 281 Industrial Ave, Vancouver BC. Off-site work mainly takes place at various locations throughout the Greater Vancouver area.
Working conditions include working at heights on scaffolding and/or on a ladder, and/or in a high-reach (aerial lift); fumes or airborne particles requiring the use of a respirator; working with or around paint/solvents/aerosols (e.g. spray paints). Working in non-weather conditions that may be wet, or humid, in extreme cold or heat; working with or near compressed gas cylinders or tanks; working with or near toxic or caustic chemicals, hazardous chemicals, fluorescent lamps or batteries. Exposure to loud noise levels. Outdoor weather conditions include direct sunlight, wind and rain

Qualifications

  • 8 years professional experience in the field of technical theatre and/or fine and performing art manufacturing management
  • 3-5 years in a supervisory role including the ability to excel in a collaborative environment
  • Well-organized with the ability to prioritize multiple priorities
  • Knowledge of production and employment standards and practices in industries of entertainment, events, and/or fabrication
  • Capable of executing best practices and procedures in the fields of entertainment, events, and/or fabrication
  • Effective interpersonal communication skills, including competence in delegation and decision-making
  • Capable of meeting deadlines in a fast-changing environment and employ creative problem-solving with a positive attitude
  • Knowledge of building materials and material procurement 
  • Understanding of WorkSafeBC guidelines and safe working practices in the fabrication and entertainment fields
  • Professional experience as a Production Manager, Technical Director, Stage Manager, Carpenter, Painter, and/or Fabricator is an asset

Employment Terms

40 hours per week, year-round. Hours are typically Monday through Friday, however some evening and weekend hours are required based on project needs. 

Remuneration
Salary range of $58,240 - $60,320 ($28 - $29/hr) commensurate with experience based on 40 hours per week

Position Summary

  • Assists with the loading and unloading of materials and sets from trucks, hand-trucks, etc.
  • Works with project leads to assist in the installation and deinstallation (strike) of designs and/or projects at the shop and occasionally off-site
  • Receives and warehouses materials and other items for use in the shop, and ensures proper storage
  • Assists in clearing and organization of building, paint, and fabrication areas so that they are ready for safe and efficient work
  • Assists in the coordination of shop space and resource allocations and helps to prepare projects for installation off-site
  • Assists with efficient plant operations including regular maintenance and cleaning duties
  • Follows shop and facility procedures to maintain a safe and effective work environment

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 2 years of work experience
  • Experience in the fields of technical theatre, production services, event logistics, and/or labour services, is an asset
  • Must be able to safely lift and carry up to 50 lbs/22 kg and effectively use handtrucks, carts, and other safe methods of moving items
  • Some knowledge of production and safety practices in the entertainment industry
  • Effective interpersonal communication skills, including the ability to understand and follow directions and ask questions when things are unclear
  • Experience using customer service skills to maintain positive working relationships with clients, vendors, and venue staff
  • Steel toe boots/shoes and work clothes are required

Employment Terms
This is a casual, on-call position. Calls are based on project and operational needs and work is not guaranteed.  Evening and weekends are required based on project schedules. Shop hours are Monday through Friday 8:00am to 4:30pm.

$18/hr
